Spacehive Project Report

In 2024 Newcastle Film Club crowdfunded on Spacehive to add to our community filmmaking kit library so that we could lower the barrier of entry to filmmaking in the North East by providing industry standard film gear to members of our community.

The Target

We needed to raise £12,978 in order to purchase the gear, run the workshops and create the video for this project and we had 76 days to do it!

“76 days was a short time to raise so much, so we wanted to keep the momentum going by posting weekly updates on how much we raised and thanking everyone who donated to the crowdfunder."

Samantha Castro,

Founder & President of Newcastle Film Club

We did it!

With the help of funding by 65 backers and funding from the Crowdfund North of Tyne Fund by North of Tyne Combined Authority, we were able to meet our crowdfunding goal!

Delivering the Project:

Part One - The Kit

Step one of delivery was waiting for the campaign money to come through and once it was in our bank account, we went shopping! We kept everyone updated on what we were buying over on our Instagram and Facebook Stories as well as updating our backers on Spacehive every step of the way.

Next was waiting for everything to arrive and then moving all of the new kit, plus our existing kit over to our new storage location which was again made possible by the Spacehive campaign and in-kind donations. Here's a picture of the 2024 Leadership team moving kit in and smiles after it was all done!

We were like little kids at Christmas, with all of these boxes to open, we wanted to share the unboxing experience with all of our members so we did a livestream of unboxing the new kit! It was great as we got to interact with members of our community via YouTube and Instagram. You can watch the livestream below!

Delivering the Project:

Part Two - The Workshops

During July and August  we took some time to get familiar with the kit and also took time to plan the next phase of our project which was the hands on workshops. We approached 5 different facilitators who had experience working within the film and tv industry or delivering classes about their specific film topic and asked them to create a short workshop teaching people how to use the new kit we purchased. We then got the venue Flamingo Heights Podcast Studio booked (who kindly let us have the space as an in-kind donation to this project) and started promoting the workshops for people to sign up to.

We created a landing page on our website all about the free workshops which people could read and book onto a workshop from.

Most of our free workshops filled up with participants! All of the workshops took place on a Saturday with the first one being on September 14th and the final one being on October 5th.
All in all we had 53 people attend our workshops across the 6 sessions. Here's what some of them had to say...

“The lads were nice and friendly, lots of anecdotal knowledge and advice, useful to get hands on."

Delivering the Project:

Part Three - The Video

The final part of this project was to use the kit that we purchased and take the knowledge we learned from the workshops to create a short video about Newcastle Film Club.
4 - Video Filming.png
A little over a week later and the video was ready to share with the world!
We went with a mockumentary style in the end, imitating a news broadcast talking about the film club, being skeptical about the group which then turns into joining the group. Watch the film below!
And that concluded the project deliverables!

So what was the real impact of our work?

£13,029
raised for this project

What's Next?

Having completed this project, our next step as an organisation is to step up our kit hire process so that our members can start using the kit that was purchased for this project.
As of 2025 we will be adding a new role to the Newcastle Film Club leadership team called 'Education Officer' who will continue to run sessions similar to what was run for this project so that more people within our local community can build the skills they need to tell their stories through filmmaking.
