Introduction to
Filmmaking Workshops

After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Spacehive, we are excited to bring to you three introduction workshops teaching you how to use some of the new filmmaking kit that we purchased for our local community to use. You can read more about the workshops and register for them below.

Introduction to Editing Workshop

If you have no experience in video editing, this free workshop is for you. This introduction workshop will teach you how to edit using Davinci Resolve. Laptops, project files to edit, and headphones will all be provided for you. All you need to do is register and then show up! :) 

 

In the 3 hours you will:

  • Have an Introduction to Editing

  • Session 1 - Learn the basics to editing

  • Have a Break & chat with others

  • Session 2 - Put everything into practice

  • Wrap up & feedback time

Your workshop facilitator is João Lazaro.

 

João is a Film and Video Editor with a BA in Visual Arts and an MSc in Education, specialising in methodologies for teaching and learning video and film production. Currently working in Content Development and Technology Enhanced Learning at Newcastle University, João’s experience spans short documentaries, films, music videos, educational video series, and animations. A Brazilian now living in the North East of England, he has interests in interview-based short documentaries, video art, DIY, and community filmmaking workshops. João is an active volunteer at the Star and Shadow Cinema, a member of the Newcastle Film Club, and part of the Brazilian Association of Researchers and Professionals in Educommunication.

Please note: Due to a limited number of spaces available for this workshop, we will be giving priority to those who have no experience or very little experience using Davinci Resolve. Because this workshop is going over editing basics, any experienced person who attends might find this workshop not useful / helpful to their creative growth. If you have any questions on if this is the right workshop for you, please send us a message via email. 

Introduction to Sound Recording Workshop

If you have no experience in recording sound for film or media, this free workshop is for you. This introduction workshop will teach you how to record sound on boom microphones including shotgun microphones and also lavalier microphones. Headphones will all be provided for you. All you need to do is register and show up! :) 

 

In the 3 hours you will:

  • Learn about Recording Sound

  • Session 1 - Split into groups to learn the basics of recording using a boom or lavalier microphone

  • Have a Break & chat with others

  • Session 2 - Split into groups to learn the basics of recording using a boom or lavalier microphone

  • Wrap up & feedback time

Your workshop facilitators are Richard W. Scott and Tony Park.

 

ABOUT RICHARD:

Richard will be teaching all about proper booming techniques and how to capture the best audio using a shotgun microphone and not be seen in the shot!

 

With 10+ years professional experience, Richard's career has given him opportunities to work in a multitude of formats including; features, shorts, docs, TV, commerical, corporate, animation, podcasts, and voiceover - with credits on BBC, Virgin Media, Adidas, Nike, and Barbour. He offers a full-service package, including; location sound recording, sound design, dialogue & sound effects editing, foley, and mixing & mastering. Having made films over for 20 years, he's dipped his toes in most departments, including; writing/directing, camera & lighting, art direction (and even on-camera presenting!), giving him the ability to communicate the language and understand the needs of each department.

ABOUT TONY:

Tony will be teaching all how to mic up your talent or cast using a lavalier microphone for interviews and short films. He'll share practical tips on how to hide microphones and avoid the scratchy noises you sometimes hear with mics that go on clothing. 

 

Tony has around 2 years of experience as a one man band Sound Recordist in short films and documentaries. He also has credits on productions such as 28 Years Later, Smoggie Queens, Farm of a Lifetime & River City as a Sound Trainee on teams with industry professionals such as: Denise Yarde, Barry Coxhead, Kate Morath, Stu Wright, Bryan Mcintyre, Matty Groark & Colin Lang.

Introduction to Cameras Workshop

If you have no experience in using a cinema camera for film or media, this free workshop is for you. This introduction workshop will teach you how to use a Canon Cinema Camera and also how to use a steadycam and jib to create movement in your films.  This will cover camera basics that are essential for anyone looking to film. All you need to do is register and show up! :) 

 

In the 3 hours you will:

  • Learn the basics of camera movements and camera settings

  • Session 1 - Split into groups to learn the basics of recording on a camera and different camera movements

  • Have a Break & chat with others

  • Session 2 - Split into groups to learn the basics of recording on a camera and different camera movements

  • Wrap up & feedback time

Your workshop facilitators are Chris Darby and Alastair Railton.

 

ABOUT CHRIS:

Chris has had a 15 year career as a professional stills photographer, before his first film as Director Of Photography on a feature film in 2010, since then has become a camera operator, steadicam operator and is constantly learning everything he can about every aspect of cinematography. In the last year has worked as DoP on nearly a dozen short films, with half a dozen more and 2 features currently in the pipeline.  Chris loves the challenge of taking a directors vision and crafting the image on the screen.

ABOUT ALASTAIR:

Alastair has directed 6 short films and 1 feature in his filmmaking career. He currently runs Fresh AIR Films & Media specialising in commercial films, feature films, short films and feature documentaries. Alastair is Newcastle Film Club's inhouse expert of the Canon R5C cinema camera which is what will be used in this workshops.
