The Dark Arts

The Dark Arts is a short folk horror film made in 2025, written and directed by NFC member John Seymour, and produced by John, Sarah Seymour and Tori Turner.
Set in an indeterminate past, the film is about three women, each of a different generation, living together in the woods in peaceful harmony with their natural surroundings. But one day, an unexpected discovery threatens the destruction of their tranquil existence...
"Quite simply, this film would never have been made without the incredible assistance of Sam and the team at Newcastle Film Club. Thanks to membership of NFC, we were able to borrow loads of amazing equipment to not only make getting the project off the ground possible, but also raise the standard of what we were able to do beyond anything we could have expected."

The Production Process
Thanks to our involvement with NFC, we were able to bring loads of amazing people on board to help with making the film, both in front of and behind the camera. NFC not only offers equipment and technical assistance, it helps you make connections and form invaluable friendships and collaborations. This was all especially true for The Dark Arts, because it was my first 'proper' film. I would never have had the confidence or knowhow to get it off the ground at all without NFC's help. If you're in the North East and you want to try your hand at film-making, even if you're a novice like me, I would urge you to get involved with NFC, if you haven't already done so.

Awards
The Dark Arts went on to win the Best North East Horror award at Terror on Tyne Horror Film Festival 2025, and has been nominated for awards at various other festivals around the world.
