About the Event

Fancy yourself as the next Mark Kermode?

Sunderland Shorts Film Festival are looking for volunteer reviewers to help choose the line-up of the 2023 event, and we'd love for you to get involved.

We don't mind if you're a film fanatic or a movie newbie, we want to hear from a wide variety of people on our content to make this our best selection of films yet!

Our training session will cover setting up an account on Filmfreeway.com, how to access the films and what criteria you can assess them on - but what is most important is what you think of the short films and music videos which have been submitted. These reviews are massively helpful to our programming team in helping to choose what will be shown at the festival.

We have found that as well as being a great way to build up reviewing and journalistic skills, volunteering for the festival also provides great insights for filmmakers as they get to see a wide variety of materials from a host of creatives from across the world - and figure out what works and why.

About SSFF:

Since 2015 Sunderland Shorts has been dedicated to providing unmissable film experiences for film fans and filmmakers alike. The 7th edition of our festival in 2022 was a massive year of growth for us with our biggest selection of films shown to our largest audiences yet. Showing over 130 short films & music videos across 15 screenings meant we were able to deliver a fantastically diverse selection of films across all genres; making sure we had something for everyone. We also hosted a number of networking and industry events including those from leading names from BFI NETWORK - FILM HUB NORTH, BBC WRITERS ROOM & NORTH EAST SCREEN.

Sunderland Shorts Film Festival returns in 2023 for our 8th year of proudly showcasing the best short films from around the World and across the country, while championing the homegrown talent from here in the region.

SSFF23 will be the 8th edition of the festival and will take place on 16 - 22 October 2023 at venues across Sunderland City Centre and submissions are OPEN NOW! Filmfreeway.com/SunderlandShorts

This workshop will be presented by Chris J Allan, Festival Director of Sunderland Shorts Film Festival
