We are proud to collaborate with the Young Women's Film Academy in order to lower the barrier of entry into film and media to those in the North East of England. This page is all about who YWFA are and how we're working together.
From YWFA to NFC
We believe that everyone should have access to express themselves using film and media. Young Women's Film Academy Future Lasses in Film is all about empowering young women and building their confidence when entering the film industry. This group supports those that are in their early career or studies or simply enjoy film making who would like to develop their skills, attend accredited training, make industry networks and gain real-world work experience and employment opportunities in a supportive environment.
The young women and filmmakers who are part of the Future Lasses in Film programme are able to take advantage of everything that is offered to Newcastle Film Club members including access to the community kit library.
We believe that a joint collaboration between YWFA and NFC helps to secure the community and support needed for young women to thrive in this industry. They start and build their confidence and voice with YWFA and can then expand and work with more creatives through NFC.
Who are YWFA?
They are a registered charity and the only young women’s film academy in the UK, based in the North East of England.
They give girls and young women the space to tell their unique, individual stories and the creative skills to communicate their ideas using youthwork principles and health & wellbeing approaches.
The three charitable objectives of their organisation are:

Providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals;

Promoting good mental health;

Advancing education and training.
Support for NFC Official Short Films
NFC is working with YWFA by giving support and trainee opportunities across the 2026 NFC Official Short Films.
We are so excited to have the Future Lasses join us on set to be part of the filmmaking production and post production!
Industry Talks & Practical Workshops
We're so excited to be doing more Industry related talks and hands on workshops with YWFA in 2026. In June 2026, NFC President Samantha went and spoke to the Future Lasses about her career within the industry and talked about how NFC is here to support them in what they want to create.
If you're a female or non-binary filmmaker and a member of NFC, let us know if you'd like to do a masterclass or guest speak to the YWFA as they're always looking for people to come and speak about what they do and how they got to where they are now.
